Fix Me Up // Trying Stitch Fix a Third Time

Filed Under: Life Tagged With: Fashion, Shopping

Back in September, I ordered my first Stitch Fix box. It was incredible. I got five amazing mix-and-match pieces perfect for my new job needs (and all for a pretty good price).

A few months later, I placed another order looking for jeans and cold weather clothes. That box missed the mark for me, but through no fault of Stitch Fix (though I did keep a dress). Just to give you an idea, they sent me a pretty grey and ivory blouse that fit great. But it had an elephant pattern and I just don’t like elephants. So the items in that box were off, but not in any way that a stylist could predict.

Flash forward a few months, and I had the urge to try Stitch Fix one more time to fill in my winter wardrobe a bit. After all, you can’t wear the same three sweaters forever (except I have). On top of that, I had a little Stitch Fix credit to burn. Twist my arm already.

Lucky for me, post- holidays Stitch Fix’s delivery schedule opened up quite a bit. In less than four days, I had a box of new clothes waiting for me on my doorstep.

Here’s what was inside:

Looking in the box, I was thrilled. Stitch Fix got me. They got me this time (as compared to almost exactly getting me previously). And as I read the note from the stylist, I knew why: she’d looked at my Pinterest board. Over the past week or two, I spent some time really picking out aspirational images that resonate with me. She did good!

Looking at everything outright, I was so happy. My Pinterest board was full of polished and embellished outfits. All these pieces seemed to fit that bill.

The green smocked shirt was just really pretty and flowy, and while I’m not always a fan of high-necked shirts, this one looked pretty nice on! I also realize that a dressy shirt or two might up my game.

Next was a really great polka dotted sweater. The price was a little steeper than I’d typically pay, but when I showed my mom, she said, “You’ve been looking for decent sweaters all year and you’ve bought none.” So this one turned into a keeper.

Then there was this beautiful star dress. I’ve said it before: I’m not big on bell sleeves. I just think that’s a recipe for disaster as far as them getting dirty or ripping them, but for this dress I made an exception. It is witchy and magical feeling.

The last two pieces I tried on together: a ribbed turtleneck and a plaid pencil skirt. I mean that’s just your standard polish and panache outfit. Shopping on my own, I’d never purchase either of these styles, though I’d eye them up curiously. But that’s what Stitch Fix is about sometimes: pushing your own boundaries. These items were beautiful in theory (and in the box), but unfortunately did not work on me.

In the end, I purchased three of the items in my box. I consider that a pretty good success rate! And, like last time, yes, these items cost a bit more than I’d spend if I saw them at the store. The thing is though, I didn’t see them at the store. And that’s the luxury of this whole service: You get to bypass grueling shopping trips and also get access to items that aren’t always available elsewhere. If that means I pay 15% more for a top than normal, that’s just a surcharge for convenience and uniqueness as far as I’m concerned.

Also, since last time I took zero photos of me in my Stitch Fix garb, I thought I’d throw one in for fun! I’ve worn this dress twice already and I love it. I feel very Stevie Nicks (even if I don’t look it).

As always, if you’re interested in trying Stitch Fix for yourself, tell ’em Lisa sent you.

Fix Me Up // My Stitch Fix Experience

Filed Under: Life Tagged With: Fashion, Work

I mentioned in my small goals post for this month that I was on the hunt for the *perfect* first day of work outfit. After spending the last year in a very casual office, I wanted some new work gear (and to treat myself a bit). I spent a lot of time scrolling my favorite sites and shopping my favorite stores for a new ensemble only to find that nothing appealed.

I was beginning to think I’d have to start a new job in an outfit I already owned – horror of horrors! Since my favorite stores and my closet were both failing me, I knew I needed help. I needed real professional style help, so I started exploring Stitch Fix.

At first I was extremely wary. How could a quiz and a few sentences encapsulate my desired style aesthetic? Would the stylist ever understand how much I hate cold shoulder tops? Could they even know how hard it is for me to find a pencil skirt? Would it be worth risking the $20 styling fee? In the end, I realized that in order to get new clothes that suited my new purpose, I needed to expand my horizons. And having a professional scouting merchandise that I couldn’t find on my own would be a an option worth exploring.

When the box arrived, I was nervous. WOULD IT BE WORTH IT? I opened the box and was pleasantly surprised by the first item: a kelly green blouse with lace detail on the shoulders. Um, wow. OK. This isn’t bad. It was actually gorgeous. Then I pulled out the textured A-line skirt with a Greek key-style pattern. This is so me. Next was a bright violet blouse with a slight ruffly bell sleeve at the elbow. HOW DID THEY MAKE ME LIKE BELL SLEEVES?! Last were a black and white polka dot blouse and a pencil skirt with a crochet overlay. Umm, close but no cigar. This shirt looks like something by best friend’s mom would wear, and this skirt is going to make me look like a stuffed sausage.

And then I tried everything on. The A-line skirt, the green top and the violet shirt were all home runs. I stared at the polka dot blouse and evil pencil skirt. I had to at least try them, even though I was certain they’d be garbage. Once I had the shirt on, I came around to it. It struck me as a bit career-y, but I suppose that was really the point. Then I put the skirt with it. I held my breath (really because I thought I’d have to suck it in). To my complete and total surprise, it fit, and it fit well. And the black on black detail was banging. Looking at everything, I was really pleased, especially because of the mix-and-match potential.

And just like that I was sold.

I purchased all five items, which came with a nice bonus: 25% off the whole box. It ended up costing me a little over $200, and I felt that was pretty reasonable for five really nice items.

I realize that this is only one box’s worth of items and that my request for clothes for a fun, creative job might have been a softball, BUT I’m still thrilled with the result. The process saved me a lot of time while exposing me to styles I wouldn’t normally consider but really enjoyed. And now instead of one ho-hum outfit of my own making, I have a mini collection of pieces from which to draw for my new gig.

So if you’re considering Stitch Fix, I obviously encourage you to try. Tell ’em Lisa sent you.

P.S. I know it’s pretty lame to post this review and not actually include any photos of me in the outfits. I’m a lame person. But I’d rather you hear how about how cool I thought this was than wait forever for me to have one decent photo.

A Christmas Miracle

Filed Under: Life Tagged With: Christmas, Fashion, Holidays, Shopping

The 90s are back. We all know this. Chokers and combat boots abound. But these are all small bananas compared to my dream 90s comeback trend: velvet.

YES PLEASE. I recall being a child and thinking velvet was the epitome of glamour (it is) and loving every velvet Christmas dress I owned (which was at least three). So early on, the idea of velvet at Christmastime was cemented in my mind. If you want to look fabulous and holiday-ready, you need a velvet dress. Plain and simple.

Except not.

Last year I ordered a plum velvet dress from ModCloth. It was a bust. As was the gold one I tried on at Boston Store. I was disappointed, but I vowed to search again in 2016. I did. I found a beautiful velvet burnout dress – but the keyhole neck was too droopy with the weight of the fabric. But then I saw a blue velvet option from Nordstrom for $58. Oh yes, this would be it! The quest was complete and shipping in two days! But lo! The cutouts looked so stupid on me! My hopes for singing “Blue Velvet” to myself were dashed. So I lurched back to Nordstrom to return another contender. I thought again, next year. I believed that the world did not want me to find a decent velvet dress.

Until I was walking out. There she was: a beautiful long sleeve velvet dress with a skater skirt and flower pattern. Only one in my size left! It was fate. I fell in love quickly. I made plans for this dress: a holiday party! Dinner! Christmas Day!

And we’ve been happily together ever since. A Christmas miracle.

P.S. I’m not a fashion blogger and my husband is not a fashion photographer, so this is the best we do.

Feeling Witchy

Filed Under: Life Tagged With: Fashion, Halloween

Lately I’ve found myself trying to channel American Horror Story: Coven Jessica Lange. In attitude mostly. I’ve had a rough go of it lately – family drama, ugh – and to get through it all, I found myself asking what would Jessica Lange do? It turned out that getting in touch with my inner Fiona Goode (Supreme of all Supremes) helped me work through some tough spots. And I found that while I was trying to act the part of head witch, I wanted to look the part as well.

witch-1
Bless my mom, but she failed to get the full-length drama of this dress of dresses.
In Coven, all the witches wore fabulous black outfits with the best hats. I love that style – so much that I emulated it a few years ago for Halloween. I found that one good hat was not enough, though. I started my hunt for witch gear and was stopped in my tracks by this dress from ModCloth. It was my Supreme dress: long, flowing, flawless (and worthy of a head bitch – er, witch). I snatched it up immediately. And while I’m not an OOTD blogger, I thought it was beautiful enough to share.

Michael humoring me as I half-sing “I put a spell on you…”
The second I tried it on, I loved it. I felt elegant, bad-ass and wonderfully witchy. I knew it was deserving of the last wedding of the season. It was the perfect support to my Jessica Lange attitude. And maybe just enough to turn me to the dark side.

Dresses for Dayyys

Filed Under: Make Tagged With: Fashion, Sewing

The past few weeks, I’ve been staying busy with some wedding embroidery projects. It felt like every spare moment I was stitching away. But now that my next wedding isn’t for a few weeks, I have a bit of room in my creative calendar – a lot actually. So with that in mind and the long holiday weekend ahead, I decided to ditch the stitches and grab some fabric.

Pattern_1

I’ve been sitting on a few good summer patterns for a while now, and I realized when it comes to these beauties, there’s no time like the present. It is July after all, so these springy dresses are already way overdue. Here’s what I got lined up for this weekend and beyond.

Butterick 6318

I can’t say no to an incredibly simple vintage reissue. It’s the perfect thing to whip up on a lazy Saturday afternoon. I had a hard time deciding on the fabric, since the black and white stripe looked so charming on the envelope, but decided not to risk those Beetlejuice vibes. I chose a pretty floral – can’t get enough florals lately.

I’ve been seeing this pattern for ages and ages, but never pulled the trigger. As much as I dug it, it always read “apron” to me. Until I saw Madison Steward on Instagram with this dress and saw the light. Turns out it’s not apron-y or housedress-y at all. It’s got some sort of elegant tea party vibe. I might have picked the old ladiest fabric out there, but I dig it.

I haven’t followed Gertie’s Blog for Better Sewing for long, but when I saw her pattern release post this spring, I knew I had to try one out. I picked up this sweet matching sarong separates pattern and her lemon sateen. This pattern is a bit more complicated than most things I sew, but I figured I’m up for the challenge. I’ve been sewing a long time – since I was 10 – so I think it’s time to add some more complex techniques to my repertoire. I’m most excited to start this pattern, but I think I’ll be warming up with the others first.

I hope you all have a safe and relaxing holiday weekend! While most of you will be heading up north or hitting the beach, I’ll be knee deep in pins and pattern pieces – and I wouldn’t have it any other way.
