Coming Soon // Walker’s Point Makers Market

Filed Under: Make Tagged With: Kaminski Handicraft, MKE

I am so excited to announce that a Walker’s Point Makers Market is here!

As you may know, I’ve been selling at Madison Makers Markets for a few years. These events are super fun because they’re part craft fair and part bar crawl (genius!). I always wished for a Milwaukee one and my wish has come true! Big thanks to Sara at I Heart Indie Markets!

You can find me and Kaminski Handicraft at Great Lakes Distillery. I’m thrilled because they’ve got some great stuff and a really awesome tasting room (and the tour is a good time, too).

Setting Sail on the USS Butterscotch

Filed Under: Life Tagged With: Food, MKE

Like everyone else, I spent 4th of July inhaling Stranger Things. I was, of course, absolutely tickled by the Scoops Troop. A nautical-themed ice cream shop is what I’m all about. If only it wasn’t fiction…

Well, praise be to Don’s Diner – my perpetual favorite – for hosting a Scoops Ahoy popup so I could live my fantasies.

Now, Don’s didn’t entirely transform their lounge into an ’80s mall ice cream shop, but they got what was really important: sailor-suited servers, Stranger Things playing in the background, an aggressively ’80s playlist and some dynamite ice cream drinks.

I love this menu so much. If I didn’t have to work the next day, I might have ordered Stupid Teenagers for the Night, which was a combo of red wine, Korbel and Coke. Red wine + Coke is good, Korbel + Coke is good, so it stands to reason to me that that’d be an alright drink. But I didn’t want to fall off my barstool.

Instead, I ordered the Jack + Coke Float. I thought it was a good time. Michael opted for the USS Caramel, and that was equally delicious.

Don’s Scoops Ahoy popup is done after its short run, but I’m crossing my fingers for another themed crossover soon!

Coming Soon // Cream City Creatives

Filed Under: Make Tagged With: Crafts, Embroidery, Kaminski Handicraft, MKE

This one’s coming up fast, folks!

I’ll be at Cream City Creatives Holiday Market this Sunday from 10-3 at Turner Hall. It’s my first Milwaukee show, so I’m pretty darn excited! That was one of my goals for 2018 and I’m almost there!

You’ll find me and 50+ Midwest makers at this show. I’m personally excited to see what Renee Graef has to offer – she was an illustrator for American Girl! But there are lots of other folks, too, so you’ll find something for all those people left on your list!

Our Blue Ribbon Wedding: Part 3

Filed Under: Life Tagged With: MKE, Wedding

I’ve dragged this series out long enough (though you can read parts one and two here)! It’s time to party.

When Michael and I started to plan our wedding, I had decided to dub it The Wedding That Made Milwaukee Famous. I realized later it was a play on the Schlitz slogan, so I then called it a Blue Ribbon Wedding (not that weddings need names). I still think the Schlitz version is funnier. At any rate, the intention for the day was the same: we wanted it to be fun and memorable for us and our guests.

First and foremost, to make it the most Wisconsin wedding possible (outside of it being at a brewery), we hired a polka band. Michael found a two-piece polka outfit, and they did a fantastic job – and, yes, they played, “In Heaven There Is No Beer.” The band was a nice accompaniment to the cocktail hour, not to mention a little something to set our day apart. It ended up being quite the hit, too. A lot of our older relatives made their way onto the dance floor (and schooled everyone), but so many of our younger friends and family got down to a little polka too. It felt really celebratory, and outside of marrying Michael and the sweet solo moments we had together, it was my favorite part of the day. It really captured that joyful feeling. You know, that joyful feeling that only a polka can provide.

The rest of the reception went as all weddings do: food, cake, dancing. Of course I enjoyed every bit of it (especially the cake).

Thanks for staying tuned for our story!

Our Blue Ribbon Wedding: Part 2

Filed Under: Life Tagged With: MKE, Wedding

I covered the very basics of our wedding day in my last post, but I wanted to share a little more about our ceremony and other sweet things about the day.

I’m not sure if I can pick out a favorite moment of the day because when you plan your own wedding, you’re essentially coordinating a day filled with all your favorite things. It’s hard to pick the best parts when it’s all the best, but I will say that one of the most heartwarming moments outside of the ceremony itself, was our “first look.” Our photographer Bobbie perfectly executed this part of the day, and it made for some really sweet pictures. I didn’t include them all because I’m ugly crying in a good amount of them, but I’m glad to have them.

I’ll also say that I’m a huge advocate of the first look/pre-ceremony photo shoot. From a planning perspective, it eliminates that awkward gap between ceremony and reception (I really hate that gap – what is everyone supposed to do?). Plus it allows you and your guests to ride that warm ceremony energy right into the reception. You just got married – you want to go celebrate, not stand in a field for two hours while everyone parties without you! But I also loved the first look because it really captured that moment in its entirety. I think it can be tricky from a photographer’s perspective to get those reaction shots in a crowded ceremony space. And, for me, I liked having the opportunity to spend some time with just Michael before we walked down the aisle. We both can be nervous people, so I think seeing one another first really calmed our nerves. I really can’t recommend this strategy (and the moment) enough.

When it came to the ceremony, I thought it was flawless. Michael, his parents and the wedding party (all two of them), walked down the aisle to the Decemberists’ “The Crane Wife 3.” Our first date was a Decemberists concert, so it was incredibly fitting, plus, I think the tune itself built up perfect wedding anticipation. I walked down the aisle to an instrumental version of “Morning Has Broken” because my parents and I are all big Cat Stevens fans.

The ceremony itself was nondenominational and really lovely. We had religious and literary readings, and we planted a birch tree together (sort of a nature-lover’s unity candle). And I ugly cried (again) during our vows. I could not help it. Michael is not an overly demonstrative person, so the second I saw him tear up, the floodgates opened. My friends were kind enough to not make fun of my weird gasp-sob.

We topped it all off with “Don’t Worry, Baby” by the Beach Boys because that’s Michael’s all-time favorite band and it has that happy ending feel (I mean, have you seen Never Been Kissed?). That part just sort of makes my heart soar.

I’ll be back soon with one more installment of this much belated series.

As always, credit to Bobbie from Roberta Rae Photography + Design. She did such an amazing job capturing the most tender moments of our wedding day. Wisconsin folks, I highly recommend her!

Our Blue Ribbon Wedding

Filed Under: Life Tagged With: MKE, Wedding

Considering how much I loved our wedding and the photos of it (and still do!), it’s sort of a shock that I had never really shared that much about it on the blog – especially since I did not hesitate to spout off a handful of anxiety-ridden planning posts. But you live, learn and then write about it two years after the fact.

To set the stage for you, the year was 2015: Barack Obama was still in office, Jon Stewart was still hosting The Daily Show and I was scouring Goodwills on the reg for the best vintage teacups. On June 12, Michael and I tied the knot at the Best Place at the Historic Pabst Brewery in front of 90 of our most beloved family and friends.

First and foremost, let’s talk about the location. The Best Place is a total and complete treasure. It has that Old World charm with a heavy dose of Midwestern-meets-German flair that I really appreciate. In fact, when I first visited the Best Place for their annual Christkindlmarket, I told my mom in passing that it would be a great place to get married. I thought that such an incredible place would be out of the question – I mean only the fanciest of fancy people could afford such a place! – so the fact that it was attainable and we actually could book it with less than six months notice was a miracle to me. And in the end, it really set the stage for a beautiful day. The stone courtyard and wood-paneled dining room really added a certain warmth and character to our day, and I’m so thankful we got to celebrate there.

Many of these photos, though, are taken kitty-corner from the Best Place at the Brewhouse Inn & Suites. Also a part of the old Pabst complex, the hotel had old school bones topped off with really modern and stylish decor. It made for a really lovely and relaxing place to get ready for the day. The prep part was fairly quick, so when I say “getting ready,” I mean putting on my dress and eating chicken tenders.

My dress, like the location, was also an incredibly lucky find. For the uninitiated, getting a dress from a traditional bridal salon means that you can expect your dress six to ten months after you order. So when I walked in with four months to spare, I had very few options. Lucky for me, some bride out there ordered a lovely Wtoo gown and decided against it, so I got a brand new dress for a (relative) steal. Besides it being my style, it was a lovely lightweight thing that didn’t slow me down for a second while I shoved my face with cake and danced a few polkas.

I’ll be back soon with more details about our ceremony and reception!

Staycation All I Ever Wanted

Filed Under: Adventure Tagged With: MKE, Vacation

IMG_4939

I’ll admit the idea of a staycation never really appealed to me. Staying home for an extended period of time on purpose? Not for me. It’s not that special vacation sort of relaxing – it’s more of the I-did-nothing-for-several-days-and-wasn’t-productive-and-am-not-refreshed sort of relaxing. But I realized that I was doing staycations all wrong.

To do them right, you don’t leave town, you just leave the house and all those chores behind. A few weekends ago, Michael and I had the perfect Milwaukee vacation at the Brewhouse Inn and Suites. We stayed there last year for our wedding (heart emoji) and had some beautiful photos taken there, but because it was our wedding day, we didn’t spend much time enjoying the hotel itself. We told ourselves we’d come back and really take the place in – and we finally did it!

BHInn_4

To give you the gist: the Brewhouse is ameezing. Elegant? Check. Historic? Check. Impeccable, industrial chic design? Check. This place is everything.

What I love the most is that although it’s this beautiful hotel, its past as a brewery is still pretty obvious. And I don’t just mean that they just have artful brewery-inspired furnishings – which they do – but they also preserved some pieces from the brewery itself like the railings, tile and two-story stained glass window. Not to mention the giant copper brewing kettles.

BHInn_2

Since this vacation was all about relaxing (and because Michael was wobbling around with a sprained knee), we decided that we’d stay put for the night. We walked to the attached Jackson’s Blue Ribbon Pub and had some Milwaukee-inspired drinks, ordered some room service and called it good.

When the rooms are as comfortable and the lounge areas so lush, it’s pretty difficult to leave. Good thing we vowed to come back soon.

Remember the Library?

Filed Under: Adventure Tagged With: Books, MKE

I’m off to the northwoods soon for my family’s annual girls only vacation. We’re way the hell up in northern Wisconsin with nothing to do but sit by the pool, paddle out on the lake, shake some dice and read. And boy do we read.

books

Every year I treat myself to a book shopping spree where I buy enough books to last me all week long and plus a few spares just in case. Favorites from last year were The Shining Girls by Lauren Beukes and The Other Typist by Suzanne Rindell. Let’s just say I made some good choices.

This year I planned to do the same: head to my local bookshop, grab an armful and enjoy. This didn’t go according to plan. After an unsuccessful trip to a small bookstore nearby, I ended up at ye olde Barnes & Noble just frumped. At $15 a pop I couldn’t afford to buy a half dozen books. I know there will be some great ones, but I also know that some will simply be a good time and some might be pretty meh. So I was standing there debating if some historical fiction about Marshall Field would be worth the price when I thought – duh – does the library have this? Is this too weird a title? So I looked that baby up, and it was available. And so was the next one about an obituary writer and another about a haunted house! Who knew the library would have every odd title I wanted? Everyone. Everyone else knew that, but I still have this mindset where I’m 10 at the Saukville library and they never have the Dear America book I want.

But not anymore! Thank you, Milwaukee Public Library.

Here’s everything I picked up (excluding the Lana del Rey albums that I find catchy and problematic all at once):

  • The Dark Between by Sonia Gensler – yes, I know this is YA, but what’s vacation for if not easy reading about the spiritualist movement?
  • Dollface by Renée Rosen
  • The Fate of Mercy Alban by Wendy Webb
  • The Obituary Writer by Ann Hood
  • The Perfume Collector by Kathleen Tessaro
  • The Vanishing by Wendy Webb
  • What the Lady Wants by Renée Rosen

So that’s it! I’m off for a bit. I won’t be reading them all, but a girl has to have options. Maybe if there are some standouts I’ll write you all a little recommendation. In the meantime, go buy The Shining Girls. It was so good and all your friends will want to read it too. My copy is still making the rounds.

The Best Place

Filed Under: Adventure, Life Tagged With: MKE, Wedding

Wedding planning is hard, you guys. And it’s especially hard when you have less than five months to do it. I mean holy cats is it a headache. Guest lists, invitations, dresses and caterers – just ugh. Like did you even know that with some caterers the flatware and china is an added cost? Or that dresses take something like eight months to be ordered? I’m convinced it’s all a beautiful lacy racket.

Fortunately, though, picking a venue was a piece of cake: a total one and done situation. Michael and I will be getting married at the Best Place. Seriously the Best Place at the Historic Pabst Brewery, and it is awesome.

Best Place at the Historic Pabst Brewery

For you Milwaukee folks, the above photo is pretty well known. I’m pretty sure you all have taken a pic of this sign before. I’m so sure because when my friends and I visited Jackson’s Blue Ribbon Pub for lunch one day, all four of us pulled out our iPhones and snapped one like a bunch of basics. It’s all with good reason though because this place is beautiful in that old world meets industrial meets German way.

Best_2

This was such a simple decision because besides being affordable, available and perfect, Michael and I have a tiny bit of history with the place. When we first started dating back in 2011, nearly every week we were out taking pictures with an armful of film cameras, and we took these around the Pabst Brewery that summer.

Best_3

The area looks slightly different now. It’s been cleaned up a bit and doesn’t look as foreboding, but it retains all of it’s old school Milwaukee charm, which is my favorite kind of charm.

Best_4

I’m pretty thrilled about this whole thing, even if I can’t figure out catering or decide on any sort of color scheme.

And if you want to visit the old Pabst Brewing area, do it! You can take a tour of the facilities, have a drink and head across the street to Jackson’s Blue Ribbon Pub for some eats (you better get that Bavarian pretzel).

Milwaukee Cookie Takedown

Filed Under: Adventure Tagged With: Baking, MKE

It’s finally here (or was here): the Milwaukee Cookie Takedown! I’ve been baking all week in preparation and at last legions of folks got to sample my (and twenty other people’s) best cookies.

Milwaukee Cookie Takedown

As I announced via the ol’ Instagram, I made my favorite Christmas cookie: cream cheese pillows. These are so tasty and delicious and I never get sick of them (and don’t worry – I’ll share the recipe very soon!). I was hoping that the judges and the audience would feel the same way.

Milwaukee Cookie Takedown

The event was super chill and I got this sick participation certificate which I will display proudly. It did heat up, however, when the judges began deliberating and the audience votes were tallied. All the bakers were called up to the stage and the winners were going to be announced, and like a 14-year-old beauty queen, my heart was pounding. The judges’ announced their winners and some of them were some awesome cookies (I’m looking at you, Gouda Girls). Then they moved on to people’s choice, and I got second place! And I was thrilled! Like how awesome.

Milwaukee Cookie Takedown

I got to take home a super cool Cuisinart food processor, a set of mixing bowls, a microplane, and niftily little knife. I had to share the glory a little with my mom since this was her recipe, so I of course thanked her in my acceptance speech. So obviously was an amazing night, and I may have carried that food processor to the car like it was the Stanley Cup.

So thanks to the Takedowns for the awesome night and the amazing people that voted for me! You all deserve high fives.
