Work

Hey, DSHA!

Filed Under: Life Tagged With: Work

A few weeks ago, I announced my departure from Taste of Home. After six years, I knew it was time to pursue other opportunities.

I’m happy to report that I’ve taken on the role of Digital Marketing Director at Divine Savior Holy Angels High School.

This is a major shift for me! I’ve spent my entire career in writing-centric roles. This role will, of course, include writing, but it encompasses so much more. And I’m really excited to be part of a smaller team and to work for an organization that supports young women.

And yes, even though I haven’t been in school for more than 10 years, all those first-day-of-school feelings were present walking inside for my first day (and I did take the obligatory first day of school photo)! I am doing my very best not to go overboard with new office supplies—but if you know me, you know that’s incredibly hard to do.

Here’s to new beginnings!

A New Look for Cabin in the City

Filed Under: Life Tagged With: Work

I’ve been craving freshness lately. That means a new job (I just left Taste of Home after six years!), a deep clean of the house, new paint in the bedroom and now a new blog theme!

It’s been nine years since I started this site, and an update was very much overdue. This new theme is from Code + Coconut, and I’m really happy with it. It’s been so easy to customize with colors and fonts. I’ll probably be futzing with it for a bit longer, but I’m so happy with the change!

Farewell, Taste of Home

Filed Under: Life Tagged With: Work

I’ve spent the last six years as an editor at Taste of Home. Saying good bye to this role is incredibly bittersweet.

Starting at Taste of Home more than six years ago, I was absolutely thrilled. I felt like I had finally found my niche. Food (particularly baking) plus writing plus a company headquartered right in Milwaukee? It was a dream come true.

Over the years, I accomplished a lot of really wonderful things. I ran the brand’s baking club, headed up dozens of taste tests, traveled across the country (and even abroad) to learn about food, saw one of my recipes on the cover of the magazine and even got to talk to Dolly Parton. These are achievements that I will treasure for a lifetime (particularly talking to Dolly!).

But work is, as always, more than just a job. Over the last six years, I’ve met some wildly talented folks and I’m happy to count so many of them among my friends.

While I wasn’t able to climb as high as I wanted with Taste of Home, there are so many positives I have to take with me as I continue my career elsewhere.

Before I start that next chapter, here are some facts about my six years with Taste of Home. I cannot believe I wrote more than 114 taste tests! Not all were delicious, but they sure were fun. And if you want to dive into my catalog, check out my complete Taste of Home digital portfolio (and my professional portfolio for kicks!).

Dream Come True: I Was on NPR!

Filed Under: Life Tagged With: Baking, Food, Work

Coming as a surprise to no one: I’m an NPR nerd! I’ve been listening to my local station for ages. It’s by far my preferred way to get the news, and I love so many of the programs.

Recently, my love of NPR has grown even more; I was invited to be on “All Sides with Ann Fisher” on WOSU out of Columbus, Ohio.

It was so much fun to be on this show. I got to talk about some of my favorite holiday cookies—including some lesser-known varieties like rosettes and khrustyky.

Listen to the show here!

Marking 3 Years at Taste of Home

Filed Under: Life Tagged With: Work

Today marks my third year of writing and editing at Taste of Home.

While the last few years I’ve celebrated my work anniversary on some really amazing press trips (one to Sonoma County, California and the other to Texas), this year I’m marking the occasion by hanging out with some of my best gal pals from work (outdoors and at a safe distance, of course).

Considering this milestone, I wanted to share a few of my proudest accomplishments and some cool projects I’ve worked on.

My Babka!

Last December, my babka recipe appeared on the cover of Taste of Home. It was such a huge, huge thrill! It’s an accomplishment that I’ll dine out on for years to come.

If you want to learn how to make it, check me out!

Trying New Things

This job provides me with the opportunity to try a lot of fun new foods, products and cooking techniques.

Recently, I got to give Caraway cookware a try and I’m in love.

Taste of Home’s Baking Club

No secret here: I love to bake (and I think I’m halfway good at it!). For a little more than a year now, I’ve been playing a big part in Bakeable, Taste of Home’s baking club.

I write a lot of our baking articles, coordinate our Facebook group and create Taste of Home’s baking newsletter. It’s my favorite work project of all time (even better than sampling boxed wine for work).

Connecting with Others

While COVID has definitely put a damper on this, I love how Taste of Home allows me to connect with other cooks and bakers. I particularly love chatting with the ultra-talented Test Kitchen crew. Without that team, I would keep baking Bundts that stick to the pan.

I’ve also had the opportunity to chat with some pretty amazing people in the outside food community, too. I’ve interviewed Christina Tosi twice (!!!), and it was such a joy and pleasure.

I cannot forget the amazing team I work on, either. I’m lucky to count so many of these gals as good friends.

If you can’t get enough of me, check out everything I’ve ever written for Taste of Home!

Covergirl // My Babka Is a Star!

Filed Under: Life Tagged With: Baking, Work

I hinted to this a few weeks back, but now I can officially make this announcement: My babka recipe is on the cover of Taste of Home!

I am so proud of this! I made this bread back in February for a regular work assignment, thinking it would just live on the internet (that was good enough for me), but I learned a few months back that it would be on the cover of Taste of Home—and the holiday issue no less!

I won’t lie to you: This is a darn good recipe. It does take a little bit of work since it’s a yeasted bread, but it’s nothing a normal home baker can’t accomplish.

Plus, the flavors here are so good. Who doesn’t love dark chocolate, orange and a bit of cinnamon? It’s just the thing to slice up and enjoy while opening gifts or for snacking on the day after Christmas.

You can get the whole how-to (and watch me make this bread) right here.

You can find the December/January issue of Taste of Home on newsstands now! I encourage you to pick up a copy.

Milestones // 6 Months as a Mary Berry Wannabe

Filed Under: Life Tagged With: Baking, Food, Work

The anniversary passed me right by, but I realized the other day via LinkedIn that I’ve been at my new full-time gig for six months already. That time just flew by! I guess that’s what happens you’re in neck deep with recipes, snacks, sweets and everything good in this world.

Anyways, I thought I’d mark this occasion by sharing a few fun things that I’ve been up to at Taste of Home.

Taste Tests

Really and truly, conducting taste tests at work is one of my favorite things ever. Every week we round up a handful of products and compare them side-by-side in a blind tasting. It’s incredibly fun and also incredibly surprising to see what brands really rank as number one!

By and large my favorite test was boxed wine, but here are a few other faves too!

Passion Projects

But working isn’t all just testing snacks of course. I also get to write up some really fun pieces that just speak to me. Obviously one of my favorite pieces that I pitched, was this amazing GBBO copycat slideshow. But there are a few others, too!

We Tried Internet Famous Pan-Bang Chocolate Chip Cookies (and Loved Them!)

Near & Dear

I’ve also got to work on some really fun projects and a few that are super close to my heart. It’s really such a pleasure to share recipes and foods that are special to me with the whole internet (not just this itty bitty, irregularly updated blog). One of my favorite pieces that I’ve got to share was my mom’s recipe for potica. But I also liked sharing my take on pierogi (which 99% of Facebook commenters hated, but I still manage to sleep at night).

How to Make Homemade Pierogi the Right Way

And there you have it! A really brief summary of my time at Taste of Home so far. Hoping the next six months are even sweeter!

Fix Me Up // My Stitch Fix Experience

Filed Under: Life Tagged With: Fashion, Work

I mentioned in my small goals post for this month that I was on the hunt for the *perfect* first day of work outfit. After spending the last year in a very casual office, I wanted some new work gear (and to treat myself a bit). I spent a lot of time scrolling my favorite sites and shopping my favorite stores for a new ensemble only to find that nothing appealed.

I was beginning to think I’d have to start a new job in an outfit I already owned – horror of horrors! Since my favorite stores and my closet were both failing me, I knew I needed help. I needed real professional style help, so I started exploring Stitch Fix.

At first I was extremely wary. How could a quiz and a few sentences encapsulate my desired style aesthetic? Would the stylist ever understand how much I hate cold shoulder tops? Could they even know how hard it is for me to find a pencil skirt? Would it be worth risking the $20 styling fee? In the end, I realized that in order to get new clothes that suited my new purpose, I needed to expand my horizons. And having a professional scouting merchandise that I couldn’t find on my own would be a an option worth exploring.

When the box arrived, I was nervous. WOULD IT BE WORTH IT? I opened the box and was pleasantly surprised by the first item: a kelly green blouse with lace detail on the shoulders. Um, wow. OK. This isn’t bad. It was actually gorgeous. Then I pulled out the textured A-line skirt with a Greek key-style pattern. This is so me. Next was a bright violet blouse with a slight ruffly bell sleeve at the elbow. HOW DID THEY MAKE ME LIKE BELL SLEEVES?! Last were a black and white polka dot blouse and a pencil skirt with a crochet overlay. Umm, close but no cigar. This shirt looks like something by best friend’s mom would wear, and this skirt is going to make me look like a stuffed sausage.

And then I tried everything on. The A-line skirt, the green top and the violet shirt were all home runs. I stared at the polka dot blouse and evil pencil skirt. I had to at least try them, even though I was certain they’d be garbage. Once I had the shirt on, I came around to it. It struck me as a bit career-y, but I suppose that was really the point. Then I put the skirt with it. I held my breath (really because I thought I’d have to suck it in). To my complete and total surprise, it fit, and it fit well. And the black on black detail was banging. Looking at everything, I was really pleased, especially because of the mix-and-match potential.

And just like that I was sold.

I purchased all five items, which came with a nice bonus: 25% off the whole box. It ended up costing me a little over $200, and I felt that was pretty reasonable for five really nice items.

I realize that this is only one box’s worth of items and that my request for clothes for a fun, creative job might have been a softball, BUT I’m still thrilled with the result. The process saved me a lot of time while exposing me to styles I wouldn’t normally consider but really enjoyed. And now instead of one ho-hum outfit of my own making, I have a mini collection of pieces from which to draw for my new gig.

So if you’re considering Stitch Fix, I obviously encourage you to try. Tell ’em Lisa sent you.

P.S. I know it’s pretty lame to post this review and not actually include any photos of me in the outfits. I’m a lame person. But I’d rather you hear how about how cool I thought this was than wait forever for me to have one decent photo.

From Peggy Olson to Mary Berry // A New Career

Filed Under: Cabin Tagged With: Work

I mentioned in my small goals post for the month that I was starting a new job. It’s true! This week I start working for Taste of Home, a food magazine based in Milwaukee. I’m really excited to start a career in a new industry, and I’m absolutely thrilled to be working back downtown.

This is a really wonderful opportunity for me to stretch my writing muscles in new way. For the first time in my professional career, I’ll be writing copy for copy’s sake (and not to sell sweaters, socks, wheelchairs or diapers). I’m a touch sad to not call myself a copywriter anymore (I really was trying to live that Peggy Olson life), but I also think that associate digital editor has a nice ring to it.

I’m a day into this new gig, but if the Mary Berry welcome sign at my desk is any indication of how this gig will go, I think I’ll be just fine.

Small Goals // September 2017

Filed Under: Life Tagged With: Etsy, Small Goals, Work

Welcome back to Small Goals! Let’s see how I did on last month’s goals.

  1. Get my summer reading list together. Done! I’ll let you know if anything is worth checking out.
  2. Get a few more designs whipped up for Kaminski Handicraft. Happy to report that this is also done! I added this Yes to staying in more! design, an X-Files hoop and a Beetlejuice hoop.
  3. Apply for the Crafty Fair. I applied for this, and unfortunately I didn’t make the cut. I also applied to Hover Craft in Milwaukee, but I won’t hear back until September 11.
  4. Get my stitching in order. Yes! My fabric and floss combinations are all in writing (finally).
  5. Clean, like really clean, my bathtub. Done. I’m pretty happy with how this turned out. The tub looks 95% cleaner and all it took was a half hour, some elbow grease and $5 for supplies.

5/5. I feel good about this past month! I had a whole week of vacation tucked in there and I still managed.

Let’s move on to September. I hate to see summer wind down, but I really love the fall. I’m going to take it easy on myself this month because – drum roll – I’m starting a new job! This is a task on its own, so I don’t want to put too much pressure on myself to accomplish a lot outside of work. Also, I’ll share more about that later!

  1. Find the perfect first-day outfit. I’ve bought a new interview outfit for every post-college job I’ve had – except for my new one. I’m going to treat myself to a new first day outfit instead.
  2. Clean up my wardrobe. Looking in my drawers and closet recently I realized that a lot of my clothes are under- or over-worn. It’s time to trim down my t-shirt collection and get rid of sweaters that have seen better days. I’m not going to go full-on Kondo by any means, but if I can get rid of a laundry basket full, I’ll be happy.
  3. Find a suitable 70th birthday gift for my dad. My dad likes simple things: new zip-front sweatshirts, Elvis memorabilia and anything he can take camping. Those aren’t going to cut it for a milestone birthday like this. I’m making it my mission to find something special for his 70th.
  4. Paint the cabin’s shutters. Our family cabin (OK – it’s a mobile home) is looking a little worse for wear due to its bleached out shutters. I want to spruce the place up and paint the shutters a fresh shade of Blue Midnight.
  5. End the mattress shopping saga. Earlier this year, I upgraded our full-size mattress to a queen. I was convinced after limited research and limited understanding about my own sleep needs that a Purple mattress was going to perfect for Michael and me. It was impossibly firm. So I ordered a Cocoon by Sealy. Still way too firm. It’s time to put this problem to rest. PUN INTENDED.

Alright, that’s all, folks! See you in October.
