30 Days of Thanks 2021 // Week 2

Filed Under: Life Tagged With: Gratitude

Back again with my 30 Days of Thanks series. As the month goes on, I encourage you to practice a little extra gratitude—and tell your kith and kin how much you love them.

Day 6: Courage

We may rib my dad a lot, but my family and I are grateful for this old man. This year has been hard for him. He’s gone from carefree retiree to full-time caretaker. He’s also had to make a lot of hard decisions that I know took some serious guts and courage.

Thanks, Dad, for being strong for the family (and for taking me out for pizza).

Day 7: Love

I truly couldn’t have made it through this year as well as I have without the love and support of this man. He makes me tea, happily watches 90 Day Fiance and knows when we need a cozy day at home.

Day 8: Nature

Michael’s family has a little northwoods getaway that we retreat to on occasion. Sitting on the deck there with a book is one of my favorite things. I get a great view of the forest, and—if I’m lucky—some animals.

Taking the time to be outdoors is refreshing and I know it’s good for the both of us.

Day 9: Friendship

This year I haven’t been able to see friends as frequently. Between the pandemic, working from home and helping the family, hangouts and catchups have been hard.

But I can’t express how thankful I am for the friends who keep checking in on me, asking after my mom, recommending books and even sending me lovely care packages. I may forget our scheduled FaceTime, but I can’t forget you, you perfect sunflowers.

Day 10: Change

Looking at this year compared to last, there are definitely some bright spots. Like this year we were able to celebrate our anniversary in style at the Iron Horse Hotel. Last year, that wasn’t really a possibility.

While the pandemic is still very much here, I do appreciate how we’re able to move a little more comfortably and safely.

(I’m also thankful for great room service, sunny mornings and crossword puzzles.)

Day 11: Seasons

Bless Michael for keeping me grounded in the seasons. He is the kind of person that insists that we save the Christmas episode of Ted Lasso for December knowing that we’ll enjoy it more then.

He’s also lovely for taking me to a new orchard during the height of apple picking season when our old favorite closed. We came home with 25 pounds of apples, donuts, cider and three giant mums.

Day 12: Music

This hi-fi has been through it! Earlier this year my father-in-law repaired this family treasure. Spinning records on it is always a treat and makes our home feel even more like itself.

I’ll be keeping up with this series all November long. Stay tuned and please take inventory for yourself. ‘Tis the season!

30 Days of Thanks 2021 // Week 1

Filed Under: Life Tagged With: Gratitude

The past few years, I’ve followed this Instagram prompt by @positivelypresent. It’s a great way to reflect on the past year and focus on some good.

2021 has been the most difficult year of my life by a mile, but even in hard times, it’s important to be grateful for what is going right. So let’s kick this off and be thankful.

Day 1: Words

As I said, this year has been challenging. I’m not sure I want to go into it here on the internet yet, but it’s been hard. While chatting with my friend Nicole earlier this year, I said that I went to get coffee because I just couldn’t fathom making a pot myself. Instead of saying, “you lazy bum,” she said, “sometimes someone else needs to make the coffee.”

As silly as it sounds, I think about these words a lot. When you’re feeling overwhelmed, it’s OK to not do all the things you’d normally tackle with ease. Sometimes, you let someone else make the coffee so you have the capacity to make it through more important tasks.

Day 2: Optimism

Sometimes focusing on the good is the best way to make it through tough times. That’s the point of this exercise this year. Is it optimism? Not quite. But I’m not quite ready.

Day 3: Color

As a kid, I always looked forward to the wild phlox popping up around my parents’ home. It’s been a while since I caught it, but I felt lucky to appreciate it this year. The bright purple is one of my favorites.

Day 4: Laughter

It might seem silly, but the second the waitress put this cocktail down at Buckatabon, I couldn’t stop giggling. It’s nice to be surprised and absolutely delighted.

I hope you have enjoyed a few sweet, simple moments like this in 2021.

Day 5: Health

Getting my COVID vaccine earlier this year was truly a high point. A big thanks to the co-worker who tipped me off to extra doses so I managed to get in a week or two before my eligibility bracket opened up. You helped me keep my family safe!

I’ll be keeping up with this series all November long. Stay tuned and please take inventory for yourself! 2021 is rough, but there are some bright spots!

30 Days of Thanks 2020 // Week 4

Filed Under: Life Tagged With: Gratitude

It’s the final installment of this year’s 30 Days of Thanks. Thank you for following along! This series has reminded me that I have a lot of things to be thankful for close to home.

Earth

I just pulled these carrots this past week. It’s the very last of what our garden had to offer and they made it to our Thanksgiving table. Thankful for this last small harvest.

Memories

I’ve got a lot of good memories to think back. Having these experiences makes getting through the pandemic a bit easier. I’m particularly thankful that Michael and I got to take a short trip this year while we could really enjoy it.

Color

90% of the common areas in our home are covered in this avocado green carpet, and I love it. It’s dated, sure, but I still love it! It’s bold, it’s crazy and it’s just right. A lot of visitors ask when we’re going to tear it up. Never! Or at least not until I have to.

This weird, ugly rug brings me joy and I’m thankful to have a one-of-a-kind home.

Love

There’s no one else I’d want to quarantine with besides this man right here. We’ve kept each other happy and comfortable all year, and that feels good.

Wisdom

My dad has a lot of mantras that he doles out. Sometimes they’re funny, sometimes they’re true and sometimes they’re even useful. One of them that I’ve been thinking about a lot lately is “If you work hard enough for long enough, someone will take notice.” And I’m trying to keep that in mind lately.

So I’m thankful for these bits of wisdom. A few others are not as helpful but I still say them: You gotta work the angles. Cash is king. Criiiiiie (kind of like “cripes” but without the “pes”). Also my mom is full of pracitcal wisdom but not the bite-sized kind.

Family

I’m missing my family a lot this year, but I’m so, so thankful that everyone has managed to stay healthy.

Above is three generations: My aunt Debby, my mom, my great-aunt Pat, me and my aunt Mary.

Progress

This fall has been a hard one. Seeing COVID numbers soar in Wisconsin is perpetually discouraging. However, I’m really thankful to hear about all the progress being made on a few vaccines.

Time

Time means something a little different once you’re presented with much more of it inside. I’m trying to savor all this extra time at home. Being home with more free time has allowed me to bake more bread, read more books, tackle more craft projects and make 200+ masks.

Curiosity

I cook a lot. I definitely cooked at least five days a week prior to the pandemic, and now I’m in the kitchen even more. That means I got tired of my same old tricks pretty quickly.

So I decided to dive a bit more deeply into cooking this year. I got really into some recipes from Wild Honey & Rye, started making a lot more from scratch (like the naan above) and just generally became a bit more curious in the kitchen. While I’ll always love baking best, I’m happy to have some more time to tackle bigger cooking projects.

Self-Love

This one’s a bit harder this year, if I’m being totally honest. But I’m trying my best to give myself some grace.

Now I’m going to ease into the holiday season. Still so much to be grateful for!

30 Days of Thanks 2020 // Week 3

Filed Under: Life Tagged With: Gratitude

Welcome back to another week of things to be thankful for. I hope you’re all enjoying a cozy November.

Change

2020 has changed everything, and while I’m not thankful for a global pandemic, I’m really grateful that I get to work from home full-time. It definitely fits my work style much better. I’m happy to have a job where working remotely is possible, and I’m hoping that this situation makes working outside of an office a possibility in the future.

Work

I really enjoy my job at Taste of Home. It’s so satisfying to take an idea from pitch to finished piece, and I love sharing baking tips and stories. You can see everything I’ve written for Taste of Home here (as if you need any more of me).

Laughter

How stupid is this costume? In costume or not, our cats are absolutely ridiculous. I love them so much. I’m pretty lucky that I get to have both of the best cats in the whole world.

Truth

The truth: I really do believe I have the two best cats in the world, and I am so so thankful for them.

These cats fill our house with energy and joy. They comfort us when we’re sick or sad. They make us laugh with all their strange habits. They drive us crazy when they cry for food even though the dish is absolutely full. I can’t put together a list of gratitude without mentioning them.

Art

My desk at work is full of inspiration. I’ve got prints from a lot of my favorite artists decorating my desk. Recently I rearranged my desk set up at home and I’ve got the perfect canvas for filling with art that I love. It’s a work in progress, but this Saint Nicks banner from Michelle Brusegaard was a no-brainer. And it’s not my only MBMB print! I’ve got two more decorating the halls of our house.

I’m thankful for artists whose interests are as niche as mine! Your work makes my house feel even more me.

Inspiration

This year, I’ve been feeling really inspired by cross-stitch. While I’ve cross-stitched on and off for ages, I’ve really caught the bug lately. It’s definitely the craft that’s inspiring me right now.

So thank you to all of the cross-stitch designers out there! I’ve downloaded a ton of patterns in the last few months and have enjoyed tackling them. I made three for Halloween alone!

Clothing

You know, I thought I enjoyed dressing up for the day, but I’m really really enjoying dressing down at home. Sure, I feel a bit like Mr. Rogers switching from my nighttime comfy clothes to my daytime comfy clothes, but that’s OK by me. I’m thankful that I get to be comfortable as we hunker down during this pandemic. Doing it in jeans or in a bra would be unbearable.

(Also shoutout to my mom who bought me this very nice Edgewood College sweatshirt that I can’t stop wearing.)

Enjoy your weekend, everyone. I hope you’re staying comfy, warm and safe.

30 Days of Thanks 2020 // Week 2

Filed Under: Life Tagged With: Gratitude

Welcome back to another week of my 30 Days of Thanks series. These posts are good way to reflect on the good parts of the year (though they may seem a bit fewer in 2020). I hope you take a little time to find something to be grateful for today, too. It’ll warm your heart.

Words

Living a slower life in 2020 has meant embracing things like snail mail and even busting out my 1970s typewriter. Writing letters and getting nice notes in the mail has been a real treat this year. I’m thankful to all my thoughtful friends and family for their kind, silly words.

Home

I’ve spent more time in my home this year than ever before. Despite hunkering down in 1,100 square-feet of space for nine months, I can say that I still feel happy and cozy here.

Even though it’s small, this house does so much for us. It serves as offices for Michael and me, a sewing space for me, a music studio for Michael and a jungle gym for the cats. We pack a lot into this space, but it just makes this house feel extra loved.

Friendship

I’ve got some great friends. I’ve got friends that send me the best astrology memes, friends that slay during online trivia nights, friends that like to talk about cats and friends that know great gossip. All of them make me laugh and lift me up. Thanks, pals!

Music

One of my goals for the month was to get our 1950s hi-fi repaired. Unfortunately, this just wasn’t possible. Instead, Michael and I treated ourselves to a new record player, and it’s brought me a lot of joy. I missed putting on music while doing the dishes or having a record spin while we putter around.

Creativity

I can’t tell you how thankful I am to have a job where I get to flex my creative muscles writing and then I can log off and work another set of muscles stitching and sewing. It really is a joy!

Dreams

We’ve put a few things on hold this year, like a trip to Ireland to celebrate our fifth anniversary. And that’s OK. I’d rather hunker down at home and be safe. But we can still plan and dream for the future. So I’m thankful for that. Also very thankful that we squeezed in a little trip this past year to Door County.

Kindness

I could go on forever on this one, but I’m thankful for all the kindnesses that have been shown to me this past year. Even though life is really hard right now, so many people go out of their way to do a little something extra.

So to the owner of Studio Ric-Rak, thanks for swapping goods for masks! To my neighbor, thanks for keeping me in business with custom hoop orders! To the stranger seeing me struggle to carry a 30-pound mushroom kit with a coffee balanced on top, thanks for helping me to my car! To my coworkers, thanks for hyping me up before Instagram Lives. To my husband, thanks for making me tea whenever I ask, making sure I take my vitamins and bringing me cats when I need one to sit on my lap (among many other things).

I’ll be back again next Friday with more. Stay safe and thankful, everyone!

30 Days of Thanks 2020 // Week 1

Filed Under: Life Tagged With: Gratitude

The last few years, I’ve followed along with the @positivelypresent Gratitude Challenge. This Instagram challenge (that I co-opt into blog posts) is a good way to reflect upon the year and count blessings.

I think this year, it’s more important than ever to take stock of what good manages to flourish, even in the darkest of times.

Health

I’m very fortunate that I’ve managed to stay healthy during this pandemic—as have my loved ones. Even with an abundance of caution, this is a feat.

I am so, so thankful for this, I can hardly express it.

Seasons

Staying in most of the year, put me more in touch with the seasons. On my daily walks, I got to enjoy the slowly warming (and cooling) weather, and in the garden, we really appreciated harvesting early crops like lettuces, then summer squash and late-season harvests like beets and carrots.

Appreciating these small changes makes staying home a bit more bearable.

Optimism

via @joebiden

Waking up on Election Day, I was full of hope. I didn’t feel worried or anxious, I actually felt good. And while it took a few days to confirm this feeling, I am so happy to see a Biden-Harris win. This fills me with such hope for the future.

And while I know this change won’t be a cure-all, it’s a big step in the right direction. Looking forward to good things!

Strength

I think it’s safe to say that 2020 has put a strain on everyone. It’s really hard to get up and keep up every day, but I’m managing it and maybe even managing it well. I think this is a type of strength. I’m certain it comes from my mom who is incredibly strong, optimistic and resourceful. I think that I inherited about 10% of what she has, but that’s enough!

Nature

Michael and I are nature people. We both grew up with dads that appreciated the outdoors. I’m thankful to my Dad for encouraging me to pick up pinecones as a kid and taught me how to make a fire. I’m thankful to have a partner that enjoys the smell of the trees the way that I do (maybe even more so).

Fun

I’ll be real: Fun has been a little harder to come by in 2020, but I’m still managing to squeeze some in here and there.

I’m thankful for costume-clad Teams meetings and virtual presentation parties. I’m also thankful for quiet forms of fun like listening to audiobooks while doing a puzzle or downloading so many cross-stitch patterns.

I’ll be back next week with more gratitude. I encourage you to take inventory of your life and find a few small things to be thankful for these days. It can be hard, but counting blessings is never a bad thing.

30 Days of Thanks // Week 3

Filed Under: Life Tagged With: Gratitude, Thanksgiving

Welcome back to another week of gratitude! November has been a crazy busy month, but I like slowing down to say thanks with these posts. A brief centering like this keeps the wheels from coming off.

Day 16: Magic

It’d be a shame not to go literal on this one! I’m truly so grateful that I got to visit Salem this past fall. My mom and I had an amazing time, and this witchy city helped me reconnect with the ghoulish, magical things I love.

Day 17: Seasons

Working in publishing, I spend a lot of time thinking about and even living for the upcoming season. But I’m grateful to come home to someone that keeps me grounded in the here and now. There’s no one else I’d rather watch Thanksgiving episodes of Bob’s Burgers with.

Day 18: Books

It sounds so silly, but I’m still so happy and thankful that I bought a Kindle. Having it at the ready in my bag helps me reduce my absent-minded screen time and helps me squeeze in a bit more reading. I’m actually two books ahead on my Goodreads challenge for the year.

Day 19: Kindness

I am truly thankful for all the little acts of kindness from strangers. These little just-becauses are so sweet and really lift my day.

So, to the barista this week who let me add vanilla syrup to my latte after I ordered (and for free), thank you. To the girl who complimented my eyeshadow while I was handing out hot chocolate for work, even though I looked silly in my rubber gloves, thanks! And to Mary Elizabeth Burt of Half-Caff Designs for giving me a shout out on Instagram, I appreciate you!

Day 20: Health

I’m so thankful that I’ve found a new doctor that I gel with. I’m not a big fan of the doctor, but my new one really put me at ease and helped me find a solution to a problem that’s been plaguing me.

Day 21: Inspiration

I draw a lot of inspiration from where I call home. Wisconsin, thanks for keeping supper clubs relevant (and consequently tasty ice cream drinks like the Grasshopper above), serving beer chasers with your Bloody Marys and making your Old Fashioned with brandy.

Day 22: Home

Every day I am thankful for my little home. It is strange, it is imperfect, it is occasionally frustrating, but it is so dear to me. What it lacks in space it makes up for in warmth and good memories.

I’m also so grateful to my great-aunt Mary who saw the potential in this little home so many years ago. Mary, you knew a good thing when you saw it.

I’ll be back next week for the last edition of this year’s gratitude challenge.

30 Days of Thanks // Week 2

Filed Under: Life Tagged With: Gratitude, Thanksgiving

Welcome back to another week of this 30 Days of Thanks. Let’s dive right in!

Day 9: Change

This is my house back in the ’60s and while so much hasn’t changed, I feel like Michael and I have made so many alterations. But every update we’ve made has been to honor this house and keep it the special place that it is to us. I’m thankful that we’re able to keep all its charms (while making sure it’s still standing).

Day 10: Peace

This photo just makes me feel peaceful. This is the Baileys Harbor Range Light in Door County. Visiting Door County is calming and familiar. I’m thankful I get to do it once in a while.

Day 11: Freedom

This photo was taken on the lake where my family vacations every summer. Being out on the water is really freeing and relaxing. It’s nice to just paddle out to the middle and float. There’s no time tables, no agendas, no cell service, just total freedom.

Day 12: Beauty

Two lighthouses in one post? You bet. This is the Portland Head Light in Portland, Maine. It’s the most photographed lighthouse in the world and for good reason. As we sailed past, it really was breathtaking. This alone was worth the trip to the East Coast.

Day 13: Color

This building isn’t a landmark (to me at least), but it still stopped me in my tracks in Kennebunkport, Maine (more on that soon). The colors of New England, particularly this house, were really inspiring and cozy to me. Still pinching myself that I got to visit. Thanks to Maine for being so wonderful (and to my Mom for going with me).

Day 14: Time

I am nothing if not an impatient person, but somehow I love a craft that takes all the patience in the world (and a good amount of time). I’m thankful to have this hobby that helps me slow down when all I want to do is go.

Day 15: Friendship

I’m pretty darn lucky to have picked up so many great friends at work over the years. Above are some newer additions to my circle and I’m so grateful for them! I’m so thankful to have a bunch of creative gal pals that encourage some of my out-of-the-box and over-the-top ideas. And I’m really thankful to have a handful of friends at work I can shoot the breeze, vent or just snag a coffee with.

See you next week for more on this gratitude challenge.

30 Days of Thanks // Week 1 + Some

Filed Under: Life Tagged With: Gratitude, Thanksgiving

Last year, I participated in the @positivelypresent Gratitude Challenge, and I want to do the same this year. I think it’s a good way to count my blessings and generally not be such a humbug.

So I’ll be posting Fridays here for the rest of the month (yes, even though it’s technically an Instagram challenge). I hope this inspires you to reflect on all the good stuff in your lives, too.

Day 1: Growth

I’ll say it now: 2019 has been a year! But in the end, I think I grew into at least a slightly better version of myself, so I’m thankful for that! But I don’t want to get too heavy right off the bat.

So I’ll say I’m thankful for the literal growth of my garden this year. Getting back into growing after a two-year hiatus was so satisfying and joyful. I’m hoping to improve for 2020.

Day 2: Knowledge

I love to learn new things. This year I’ve tried to brush up on a lot of new kitchen techniques like pickling. I’m thankful to have the time to dive into new ideas and projects.

Day 3: Love

I’m so thankful for this darling man and his love. Michael is so wonderfully warm-hearted and he is accepting of me and all my good and aggravating traits (like leaving embroidery floss everywhere but also being pretty good at embroidery).

Day 4: Music

Eight years ago, Michael and I flew to Montreal to see Beirut at a music festival. This was very much on a whim and very much an over-the-top way to start a relationship. But it was a wonderful and beautiful time (and the show was great).

Earlier this year, we got to see the band again right in Milwaukee, and I’m so thankful we got to do it! It was a great way to rekindle some of those fond memories.

(Psst… that’s us eight years ago at the show in Montreal.)

Day 5: Nature

The Great Lakes are such a special place. I’m thankful I live, work and vacation right on these lakes (particularly Lake Michigan, though shoutout to Superior!).

This shot is from Cave Point Park in Door County. It’s always been one of my favorite spots. Door County has such a special place in my heart.

Day 6: Creativity

I’m so happy that creativity plays such a big role in my life. I get to be creative at work and when I come home, I’ve got a creative outlet with my many, many crafty hobbies. I’m thankful that I get to express myself and create.

Day 7: Memory

Lots of great memories this year! I’ll say that turning 30 was a highlight and I’m thankful to all my friends and family who celebrated with me.

Day 8: Work

I can’t say how thankful I am to have a job I really enjoy and some really fun and creative coworkers. Working for Taste of Home challenges me in all the right ways. This year I’m really proud of making this chocolate babka. I’ll have some big news on this soon, but for now, enjoy this video!

• • •

See you next week for more on this gratitude challenge (which isn’t much of a challenge because I’m lucky enough to have lots to be thankful for).

#Gratitude30 // Week 4

Filed Under: Life Tagged With: Gratitude, Thanksgiving

Day 24: Knowledge

I’m going the easy route with this one, but I’m super thankful for Edgewood College and all the bits of knowledge I picked up there. While I occasionally had doubts about the place (that’s just me and my ever-changing interests), I realize now that there was no better school for me. This became especially clear to me recently when I talked with a former professor of mine doing some research for an upcoming book.

As a liberal arts college, Edgewood allowed me to pursue a lot of my interests and helped me connect the dots between different subjects in a really helpful way. It was a great place for a multi-passionate person like myself. So I’m so thankful to Edgewood, my aunt for recommending it to me, the newspaper there and my favorite professors.

Day 25: Comfort

I can’t believe it took me 25 entries to be thankful for my two cats! Mukki and Zara are pretty much the lights of my life. They bring me so much joy and also a lot of comfort.

It’s really incredible to me how sensitive they can be. When I’m feeling down or even just under the weather, they’re right there to cuddle up by me. Not to mention a nap on the couch with both of them, is just about the sweetest, most comforting thing in the world. Mukki and Zara, I hope you know how much you’re loved!

Day 26: Time

This is such a big topic to tackle that I’m having a lot of trouble. But I’ll say this. I’m happy for the time that I have. I’m happy I get to spend a lot of it with Michael and our pets. I’m thankful for every moment with my family and my good friends. And I’m thankful for all the good times that have passed.

Day 27: Luxury

Sure, it was a trip for work, but going to Sonoma County was probably one of the most opulent trips I’ve ever taken. I sipped on some tremendous (and tremendously expensive) wines, ate gorgeous meals and enjoyed every second. You might be sick of hearing about this trip, but damn was it spectacular. I’m thankful that I got to enjoy it.

Day 28: Work

I’ve had a lot of jobs in my day, and I’m incredibly lucky and thankful to have one I truly like. Working for Taste of Home is really a great joy. I’m so thankful to my two friends that helped hook me up with this job and to all the amazing creative people I work with every day. The fact that people applaud me for eating eight cheeseburgers is nothing short of a wonder, and for that, I’m so thankful.

Day 29: Creativity

I’ve said it once, and I’ll say it again: I’m the woman of a hundred hobbies. But you know what – that’s OK! I’m really and truly thankful to have all these interests. Whether it’s writing, stitching, baking or whatever vintage craft I’ve dredged up, I’m thankful that I have the time and enough talent to give them a go. Creative endeavors of all kinds keep me at my best!

Day 30: Self-Love

I immediately thought of this Instagram post when I saw this prompt. “If self-love says, ‘I love you,’ self-care says, ‘prove it.'” And I will say that I genuinely like myself (though I still have flaws abound), but in order to maintain that best version of myself, the person in me that I like, I need a bit of self-care. Like I said in my post about holiday stress, taking time to myself – be it grab some coffee, watch a good show or even a walk around the neighborhood – does me a world of good. I consider all those things to be forms of self-care.

I’m thankful this season that I can say that I like me for me and that I’ve got the time and means to prove it.

• • •

To everyone that tuned in to this #Gratitude30 series, thank you so much! I appreciate you reading!
